Third entry in the Top 5 – the huge summer tour with Guns N’ Roses and Metallica co-headlining supporting the Use Your Illusion twin albums and The Black Album. Faith No More opened up because Curt Cobain turned down the gig in spite of Axl Rose’s desire for Nirvana to open to further make it one of the greatest concerts of all time. For me, the killer performance was Metallica who were second in line – a horrible call in my opinion. You don’t amp up for something as heavy as Metallica to follow with a band that has ballads like Don’t Cry and Patience. Guns N’ Roses were stellar as well, it just felt like the vibe shifted in the wrong direction for the GNR show. Not to mention we had been sitting for a full hour and a half after Metallica finished, waiting on GNR to take the stage.
I went to this concert with Scott, a close friend from the late college and post-college years, and some third co-worker I can’t recall. Setlists were amazing and can be seen HERE (Metallica) and HERE (Guns N Roses). Scott hated Metallica…he actually went to sleep during their show. But then again, that boy was destroyed by the time we got there.

Was at that concert too. Forgot to mention Metallica was booed off the stage twice. GNR blew the doors off the place.
Metallica got booed? I don’t recall that at all…but then again, my memory is definitely slipping as I age. I remember that Guns kept everyone waiting for almost 2 hours after Metallica finished. Completely self-indulgent and unnecessary. But yes, they did blow the doors off once they hit the stage.
Metallica was definitely not booed off the stage. They destroyed, and the crowd was definitely there for them. People tend to forget this was Metallica at their peak, while many viewed GNR as a bloated Vegas act with the extra musicians, singers, etc. There was no way for GNR to follow Metallica on that day. GNR had their high points in the set, but it just dragged on and couldn’t match the intensity of Metallica — and I say this as a huge GNR fan. But there’s no doubt who owned that day, and based on just about every other review, recollection and bootleg from other shows, it wasn’t a one time thing.
The Poster that is posted above for the Metallica and Guns N Roses show in San diego on August 14th? Did that happen or is this one of the shows that got postponed because James had burned his arm in Montreal? I’m just curious cause I want that poster but I don’t know if that was one of the shows that got cancelled.
Was at the show too…..I thought Metallica and GnR were both great that day. Also for the tour it was my understanding that Metallica and GnR rotated the opening/closing positions every concert…..so Metallica closed the following gig while GnR opened. ALSO….does anyone remember the crowd mayhem in the hour and a half that when on after Metallica??? I thought a full scale riot was going to take place….all of which was settled by cameramen scanning the crowd and with the lovely O-town ladies flashing their tits for a solid 30 minutes leading to GnR taking the stage. Made for a very interesting and awesome evening.
I was at this show! Faith No More rocked!!! Metallica was very good!! WAY TOO long of a delay for GNR to come out but the women taking off their tops really helped! GNR opened with Welcome to the Jungle which was awesome but then it went all downhill from there. My buddy Rob and I noped out when Axel started playing a piano solo at like 1:30 in the AM
