The very first Summer Sanitarium Tour! Orchestrated by Lars and James of Metallica, the bands were – Powerman 5000, System Of A Down, Korn, and Kid Rock and of course, Metallica. EPIC BILL! SOAD, Korn and Kid had kick-ass performances on their own in addition to the substitution jam session with Metallica that was to become the Metallica set. In a crappy turn of events, James Hetfield wasn’t able to perform or even be on stage due to a back injury he sustained jet skiing with Kid Rock earlier in the day. Metallica‘s set consisted of songs sung mostly by Jason Newsted, the bass player at that time, along with Kid Rock, Daron Malakian (SOAD), and Jonathan Davis swapping up for a few songs each. It had a very loose vibe to it and was a fun way to carry on the show given the situation. Kid Rock performed his Metallica-sampling hit, American Badass, with Metallica on duty as the backing band. Very cool! I think the Metallica setlist ended up being really interesting so I included it below. James’ injury spawned quite a historic concert!
